Committee on Mechanics of the Polish Academy of Sciences awarded the prof. Michał Życzkowski Scientific Prizes for the year 2017. Dr. Dariusz Jarząbek received the prize of the two degree.

Research topics carried out by dr. Dariusz Jarząbek from the beginning of his scientific work have focused on the measurement of mechanical, tribological and rheological properties of materials at micro and nanoscale. The PAN Committee of Mechanics Award has been awarded for a series of publications including measurements of adhesion between components of composites and development of an innovative lateral force calibrator for the atomic force microscope. Dr. Jarząbek contributes to the improvement of formation of sintered powder composites. Due to his research it is possible to increase the adhesion between the particles and the matrix, and thus the composites have enhanced mechanical properties (fracture toughness). Increased adhesion can be obtained by changing sintering parameters (temperature, pressure, sintering time, etc.) and, for example, by coating ceramic particles with protective layers. Dr. Jarząbek's research also includes composite coatings manufactured in IPPT, created in electrodeposition technology (e.g. nickel-silicon carbide).

The Committee on Mechanics has been established in 1960. The activities of the Committee are concerned with research in the following scientific areas:

  • solid mechanics and particularly mechanics of materials,
  • structural mechanics,
  • fluid mechanics,
  • biomechanics,
  • dynamics of material systems,
  • mechatronics,
  • optimization of systems and processes,
  • detection and investigation of the laws governing motion, deformation and strength of material media.

The Committee acts as the National Committee for Cooperation with the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) and International Centre for Mechanical Sciences (CISM)
