On May 7, 2018, the Polish Patent Office granted a patent for the Institute of Fundamental Technical Research, Polish Academy of Sciences (IFTR PAS), Nałęcz Institute of Biocybernetics and Biomedical Engineering, Polish Academy of Sciences (IBBE PAS) and Warsaw University of Technology (WUT). Title of the invention: "A method for the preparation of a wide-porous, polyester cellular scaffold".

The subject of the invention is a method for obtaining wide-porous cellular scaffolds using nonwovens from biodegradable polymers. These nonwovens are produced by electrospinning method, which ensures strictly controlled pore morphology and fiber size. The pores formed in a membrane have a defined structure, corresponding to the morphology of the nonwoven used. The pores obtained by this method are open and interconnected, which is extremely important from the biological point of view, because it ensures the supply of nutrients, easy disposal of cell metabolism and degradation products of membrane-forming polymer in medical applications. These materials are intended for use in cartilage regeneration and are currently undergoing clinical tests on an animal model.
