The detailed program of the Festival, presented before the event, included:

September 22nd

  1. From droplets to microlaboratory. Lecturer: Piotr Korczyk, PhD, Monday, September 22nd, 2014 at. 12:30.

    Microfluidic systems consist of channels of the width comparable to human hair, through which the liquids flow. Such systems allow for precise formation of droplets of the desired concentration of reactants and control of their movement. This enables to carry out different types of reactions inside tiny droplets. Thus integrated microfluidic systems can serve as a miniaturized laboratories. The show will start from the presentation introducing the subject and then the laboratory exhibition will provide examples of working microfluidic systems.

September 23rd

  1. Is nanotechnology able to change the world? Nanomaterials as a future of regenerative medicine and drug delivery systems. Lecturers: Tomasz Kowalczyk, PhD. Eng.; Paweł Nakielski, MA and Wioletta Liwińska, MA (guest from Warsaw University, Dept. of Chemistry). Tuesday, September 23rd, 2014 at. 12:30.

    The Festival lesson consists of two 20 min. presentations giving the outline of: electrospinning*, nanomaterials and its applicationsin medicine – first is a mini lecture; the second is a laboratory presentation of nanomaterials production. Active participation in the lesson is invited.
    * Electrospinning is a new, facile and very promising method used to obtain nanomaterials. Nanofiber yarn produced by this technique have a high application potential in regenerative medicine and Drug Delivery Systems.

September 24th

  1. The role of the surface layer in applications engineering. Lecturers: Grzegorz Starzyński, PhD; Dariusz Jarząbek, PhD. Eng.; Neonila Levintant-Zayonts, PhD and Assoc. Prof. Stanisław Kucharski, PhD., Dr Habil., Eng. Wednesday, September 24th, 2014 at. 10:00.

    The surface layer is everywhere. Nature has provided it in all living organisms. Human skin, fish scales, bark of trees are just some of the examples. Due to not fully defined its structure, was wounded researchers for a long time - what is surface layer? - If there is no element of the surface layer? - Where it begins and where it ends? - Whether the surface is a surface layer, or a separate thing? - Why at the different scales layer looks different? These and a number of other questions we will try to answer during the meeting about the role of the surface layer in applications engineering. We show also a unique apparatus for manufacturing a layer, and to measure their properties.

  2. Can technology be intelligent? Lecturers: Andrzej Świercz, PhD. Eng.; Tomasz Zieliński, PhD. Eng.; Grzegorz Mikułowski, PhD. Eng.; Piotr Pawłowski, PhD.     The classes are divided into two parts: a lecture and experimental demonstrations. In the first part, several functional (smart) materials will be discussed. Such materials can change their properties in a controlled manner due to certain external factors. Their controllability allows them to be the key factors in innovative technological solutions. In the second part, selected smart materials will be used in experimental demonstrations.

September 25th

  1. Small and beautiful - polymer crystals. Lecturers: Arkadiusz Gradys, PhD. Eng.; Dorota Kołbuk, PhD. Eng.; Assoc. Prof. Paweł Sajkiewicz, Ph.D., Dr. Habil., Eng. Thursday, September 25th, 2014 at. 10:00.

    Crystallization and melting of polymers will be investigated by optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. Investigation under polarized light reveals unusual variety of polymer morphologies.

  2. Why do the cells like polymer nanofibers. Lecturers: Piotr Denis, M.Sc., Eng.; Assoc. Prof. Paweł Sajkiewicz, Ph.D., Dr. Habil., Eng. Thursday, September 25th, 2014 at. 12:30.

    The lab classes contain demonstration of formation of polymer nanofibers by electrospinning from solutions, some methods of structure analysis, including in vitro analysis of cell behavior on nanofiber scaffolds.

  3. Superstrength in nanoscale. Lecturers: Dorota Kołbuk, Ph.D., Eng; Olga Urbanek, M.Sc., Eng.; Assoc. Prof. Paweł Sajkiewicz, Ph.D., Dr. Habil., Eng. Thursday, September 25th, 2014 at. 11:30.

    The lab classes contain demonstration of formation of polymer nanofibers by electrospinning from solutions, investigations of structure and mechanical properties from the perspective of various, possible applications of nanofibers.

September 26th

  1. Porosity in the nature – from atom to bone and concrete. Lecturers: Daria Jóźwiak-Niedźwiedzka, Ph.D., Eng; Przemysław Ranachowski, Ph.D., Dr. Habil.; Ryszard Wojnar, Ph.D., Eng. Friday, September 26th, 2014 at. 10:00.

    The Festival lesson has character of the lesson about the nature. It has two chief motifs: theoretical one concerning the fascinating problem of porous media in different scales of nature and technology, and practical – concerning the determination of the concrete properties by optical and acoustical methods. The lesson will be complemented by concise introduction to the subject.

  2. Safety in modern rail transport. Lecturers: Assoc. Prof. Tomasz Szolc, Ph.D., Dr. Habil., Eng., Robert Konowrocki, Ph.D., Eng . Friday, September 26th, 2014 at. 12:00.

    Safe travelling, importance of the modern railway, reasons of disasters and accidents, experimental methods of investigations of crash consequences, methods of computer simulations of crashes, base of the research of rail vehicle traffic in virtual world.
