DEMONSTRATION I – SHAPE MEMORY EFFECTS IN ADVANCED MULTIFUNCTIONAL MATERIALS

Presentation 1: Shape memory effects in TiNiShape Memory Alloys ( E. Pieczyska)
Examples of TiNi shape memory alloy (SMA) samples were shown. Their structure and properties were explained using especially prepared posters. It was presented how the SMA shape and dimensions change depending on the temperature. Volunteers deformed wires, springs or clips produced from SMA and reference alloy After immersing SMA elements in hot water they recovered their former shapes and sizes. Using the posters it was explained that the observed effects result from the crystallographically reversible martensitic transformation, which occur in SMA and can be stress- or temperature -induced. Research conducted in in this area in IPPT was described stressing international collaboration, in particular with Japan.
Presentation 2: Phenomenon of magnetism (K. Golasiński)
The phenomenon of magnetism was presented at the stand. The presentation covered different ways of applying magnetism in medical devices. Magnetic resonance imaging as well as magnetic hyperthermia were explained. Health embraces beauty and nutrition thus ferromagnetic nail paints and induction heating were shown too. The experiments included singing magnets and Gauss rifle, which illustrated possibilities of magnetic field generated bypermanent magnets and encourages many participants to conduct the simple spectacular experiments.
Presentation 3: Biomechanics modeling of bones (M.Majewski)
During the Science Picnic 2016, a lecture were delivered about the biomechanics of human bones and concepts of modeling it. An animated video was made for the purpose of the lecture, which helped the youngest listeners to grasp the idea of numerical simulation. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of the topic, the presentation explained issues of medical and mechanical nature. At the beginning the main research areas of biomechanics were presented, then the structure of human bones were showed. At the end the concepts of biomechanics modeling of bones were discussed. In addition, the schematic structure of the nodes and the shape functions was presented for the purpose of explaining the discretization mechanism of Finite Element Method.

DEMONSTRATION II – MEDICAL DIAGNOSIS

Presentation 1: Ultrasonic Doppler flowmeter
During the picnic, we presented the mode of functioning of a simple ultrasonic Doppler flowmeter, which enables us to test the condition of the cardiovascular system through examining blood flow speed. By listening to the Doppler signal in the radial artery, every participant could witness how physical activity affected blood flow speed and heart rate.
Presentation 2: Wireless Medical Sensors
The subject of the second demonstration were wireless medical sensors that allow for long-term monitoring of select physiological parameters, which are then transmitted to a remote data base. This way, patients can be tested and monitored without the necessity of frequent visits to a doctor or hospital.
