On 31st of May 2017, the Patent Office of the Republic of Poland granted a patent for a team from IPPT PAN, IMDiK PAN and WUM: DSc.Jarosław Andrychowski, Prof. Małgorzata Frontczak-Baniewicz, Prof. Zbigniew Czernicki, DSc. Dorota Gołąbek-Sulejczak, Prof. Tomasz A. Kowalewski, Dr Tomasz Kowalczyk and Dr Paweł Nakielski. The invention title is "Application of electrospinning nanofibres as neuroprotective dressings for use in the prevention of post-traumatic changes in the brain."

The objective of the invention is to provide a solution modifying scar tissue formation after brain damage, inhibition of neurodegeneration and death of nerve cells by isolating damaged tissue and providing neuroprotective effect. The inventors have shown neuroprotective properties of nanofibers as an active dressing preventing pathological changes in the brain parenchyma. An additional claim include incorporation of neuroprotective agents such as antioxidants that eliminate free radicals, as well as neurotrophic factors.
